12 Churches In France Attacked – Is Notre Dame Connected?

Today’s fire in Notre Dame is the only reason I paid attention to this report, dated 20 March 2019, but I haven ‘t read this in the Mainstream News Media.

Is the horrendous fire at Notre Dame possibly related?  I doubt it but this would be like the 9-11-2001 in church ‘vandalism’ for Islamic Terrorists. Let’s hope not.

The source is strongly biased to the right.

THOMAS D. WILLIAMS, PH.D.

A dozen Catholic churches have been desecrated across France over the period of one week in an egregious case of anti-Christian vandalism.

The recent spate of church profanations has puzzled both police and ecclesiastical leaders, who have mostly remained silent as the violations have spread up and down France.

Last Sunday, marauders set fire to the church of Saint-Sulpice — one of Paris’ largest and most important churches — shortly after the twelve-o’clock Mass.

Police have concluded that the fire was the result of arson and are now looking for possible suspects. The restoration of the church from the damage caused by the fire will reportedly cost several hundred million euros.

In Nimes (department of the Gard), near the border with Spain, the church of Notre-Dame des Enfants was desecrated in a particularly odious way, with vandals painting a cross with human excrement, looting the main altar and the tabernacle, and stealing the consecrated hosts, which were discovered later among piles of garbage.

Likewise, the church of Notre-Dame in Dijon, in the east of the country, suffered the sacking of the high altar and the hosts were also taken from the tabernacle, scattered on the ground, and trampled.

In Lavaur, in the southern department of the Tarn, the village church was assaulted by young men, who twisted one arm of a representation of the crucified Christ to make it appear that he was making an obscene gesture.

In the peripheries of Paris, in the department of Yvelines, several churches have suffered profanations of varying importance, in Maisons-Laffitte and in Houilles.

Although commentators have been reluctant to attach a particular religious or cultural origin to the profanations, they all share an evident anti-Christian character.

In recent months, anti-Semitic gangs have desecrated Jewish cemeteries, signing their actions with swastikas. In the case of the desecration of Catholic churches, the vandalism has spoken for itself: ridicule of the figure of Christ on the cross and desecration of major altars.

The Catholic hierarchy has kept silent about the episodes, limited themselves to highlighting that anti-Christian threat and expressing hope that politicians and police will get to the bottom of the crimes.

Reports indicate that 80 percent of the desecration of places of worship in France concerns Christian churches and in the year 2018 this meant the profanation of an average of two Christian churches per day in France, even though these actions rarely make the headlines.

In 2018, the Ministry of the Interior recorded 541 anti-Semitic acts, 100 anti-Muslim acts, and 1063 anti-Christian acts.

  1. Joel: Sorry, but this reports is largely fabricated: not surprisingly it comes from BreitbartNews. Another similar report appeared on the Gatestone Institute’s web site (by Raymond Ibrahim). It is also largely fabricated. French authorities have asked ISP to study how to block viewing of Gatestone in France, on the basis that mast year it made a specialty of publishing articles by French far-right authors that would have fallen foul of France’s and Council of Europe’s hate speech laws and case law.

  2. Not so fast, Giles.

Newsweek said the same thing. https://www.newsweek.com/spate-attacks-catholic-churches-france-sees-altars-desecrated-christ-statue-1370800

The Washington Post said the same thing. https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2019/04/02/satanic-symbols-shattered-statues-several-catholic-churches-have-been-under-attack-france/

Just because the source is conservative, you cannot dismiss it when there is corroborating information.

There are a buttload of other links saying the same thing.

  3. Joel: Yes, they all use the distorted data. And mix up things that are unrelated. The Satanic symbols are by a bunch of crazies. There is an article in the soon-to-be-banned( in France) Gatestone institute which adds all this and assign the whole thing to Islamist extremists.
I posted the real figures for anti-religious/hate attacks in the iRPD group on LinkedIn, but thanks to LinkedIn inane new format for groups, about only the previous three weeks remain available.
The Breitbart-fabricated figures say that in 2018, the Ministry of the Interior recorded 541 anti-Semitic acts, 100 anti-Muslim acts, and 1063 anti-Christian acts. Actually the anti-Muslim act came first, followed by anti-semitic acts (in sharp increase, but from an all-tile low in 2017. Anti-Christian acts (generally not perpetrated by Jews or Muslims, except a few by Islamist extremists),
Steve Bannon has allied with Raheem Kassam (former UK editor of Breitbart) to create The Movement in Brussels, an anti-EU far-right movement trying to federate the European far-right and bring down Pope Francis (in his crusade against Francis he is helped by the extremist Dignitatis Humanae Institute, Benjamin Harnwell, a conservative British Catholic with ties to UKIP, conservative American cardinal Raymond Burke and the wealth US Tradition, Family, and Property (TFP) group de fcato led by John Horvat II, (The original TNP was founded by a Brazilian to fight the conclusions of the Vatican II consilium). The TNP is the biggest Bannon financier. These are the real enemies of the Catholic church in Europe and the US.
I’ll retrieve the real figures from the French interior ministry and will email them to you.

    1. PS: One of those who in France have been spreading these largely false news, Alain Soral, a far-rightist and occasional contributor to Breitbart News and the Gatestone Institute, was on Monday 15 April sentenced to one year in prison for Holocaust denial. It is the second time he’s been given a prison sentence this year for Holocaust denial, a crime in France under the so-called Gayssot law. He has been sounding alerts about the “numerous” anti-Christian attacks this year on Churches, allegedly by Muslims, Jews, atheists, etc. All churches in France (Catholic, Federated protestant denominations, Jewish, Muslim, etc, have condemned his activities. He’s also a strong supporter of the Yellow Vests movement.

      1. Re Notre Dame, the Paris Prosecutor, the Archbishop, the Paris Mayor, the French Presidency have all said that the fire was most probably accidental, probably due to negligence of a contractor’s team carrying repair work inside the Cathedral. There is t this stage zero evidence of foul play. Of course one will have to await the completion of the investigation to be more specific. A French domestic intelligence service (DGSI) has observed on BFM TV that the article in Breitbart News by Thomas D Williams is a quasi copy of a piece on the extremist web site 4chan.com. Recall that the guys at chan4.com are those who carried put the second hack on the candidate Emmanuel Macron’s servers. The first one was by a Russian group but failed, the French having requested the cooperation of the NSA.
