In a mind-boggling display of arrogance, the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) wants to effectively cut themselves off from the global Orthodox Church.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) outnumbers the ROC, and with the ROC threatening to excommunicate themselves, the ROC will be, de facto, ineffective in relative terms.
This is childish behavior, it serves no purpose other than to expose themselves as petty.
TASS’s article, The ROC threatened Constantinople with a break in relations if he approved the Ukrainian split, puts the blame on the UOC. The Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk says the UOC didn’t ask for autocephaly, so it shouldn’t be granted.
RT has a different spin, which no references, citations, or proof in Russian Orthodox Church will ‘cut ties’ with Constantinople if it makes Ukrainian Church independent
. “Most Orthodox clerics in Ukraine still pledge loyalty to the head of the Russian church, Patriarch Kirill, and consider themselves to be part of the Russian Orthodox Church.”
The ROC church has already shot itself in its figurative foot with this statement,
“The Russian Orthodox Church will not accept this decision,” the cleric said.
RFE has a slightly different spin, quoting him as saying “we will have no choice but to sever relations with Constantinople”, in Russian Orthodox Church Threatens Retaliation Against Istanbul-Based Patriarch.
‘If you don’t do it our way, we’re not going to play with you’.
Childish behavior from the Russian Orthodox Church. Maybe it’s a Russian thing.
