Ex-chief of Ukrainian Navy warns of “worst-case scenario” over Russia’s actions in Azov Sea | UNIAN

Former deputy and the then Commander of the Ukrainian Navy Serhiy Haiduk has warned of danger related to the “worst-case scenario” over Russia’s actions in the Sea of Azov and said Russia’s geopolitical encroachment on Ukraine concerns aims at depriving it maritime country’s status. According to Haiduk, Russia is implementing a strategy of chaos in the Sea of Azov and is meticulous about everything step by step. “‘The project of Novorossia’ is on Russia’s agenda, and the actions that are being conducted on the coastal flank in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov are Russian steps concerning the implementation of this project,” he told Espreso.TV.

Window on Eurasia — New Series: Moscow Seeking to Provoke Revolts in Ukraine’s Azov Sea Ports, Ukrainian Admiral Says

Paul Goble Staunton, August 27 – Admiral Serhiy Hayduk, commander of the Ukrainian navy, says that Russia is seeking to provoke revolts in Mariupol and Berdyansk by blocking shipping to them on the Sea of Azov and thus creating increasingly difficult conditions for those employed in those ports (nsn.fm/hots/ukraina-obvinila-rossiyu-v-provocirovanii-buntov-v-strane.html). Some 5,000 people are employed in these ports, the admiral continues, and if there is no ship traffic, they will rapidly lose their jobs. Russia is interested in promoting that outcome because it hopes to be able to exploit any social and economic unrest to spread Russian control along the western sides of the Sea of Azov. There are even indications that pro-Moscow forces may be doing more than just wait for economic problems to become political ones. Over the weekend, “unknown persons” attacked a concert in Mariupol “beating up both the musicians and the fans” (spektr.press/vzvod-fashikov-na-gruppu-shkolnikov-kak-v-mariupole-rassleduyut-napadenie-na-koncert-pank-gruppy/). Given how tense the situation is there, only 10 kilometers for the Donbass region now controlled by pro-Moscow forces, it is entirely possible that someone came from there in order to sow confusion and chaos in the Ukrainian port city, although Russian sources like Spektr. Press insist that no one has yet been able to identify the attackers. But of course, if this was an FSB operation, that is exactly how things would play out: agents would cross the border, do their work, and then retreat back to where they had come from, with Russia media providing cover by highlighting the failure of Ukrainian police to bring the perpetrators to justice, something that would also contribute to what Moscow appears to want.

U.S. could give Ukraine weapons to repel possible Russian attack from sea – expert | UNIAN

“A window of opportunities” is open for Ukraine to receive lethal aid from the United States, while arms deliveries for the Navy are on top agenda, that’s according to a leading expert on Russia at the American Foreign Policy Council, Dr. Stephen Blank, who for a quarter of a century taught at the U.S. Army War College many of those who now work at the Pentagon. At the same time, Ukraine should continue reforms for its own sake instead of trying to look good in the eyes of the United States, the expert says, adding that this increases the chances to survive and prevent a big war. The amount of US aid to Ukraine in the new US military budget has already been set at $ 250 million. However, the question of what kind of weapon and equipment Kiev will receive remains open. What is now on the list of priorities and what plans are being discussed in Washington, said Steven Blank, a leading expert at the American Foreign Policy Council, who spoke for a quarter of a century at the US Army War College and is a teacher. many of those who are currently working in the Pentagon. – “Opportunity Window” (for lethal weapons – ed.) Is open. And now, as far as I know, the first is the supply of armaments to the Naval Forces. There is a real threat in the Sea of Azov and even in the Black Sea … Everything seems like Russia is trying to hit the economic well-being of Ukraine and may even even threaten to block Odessa, threaten the landing of a landing on the Azov Sea, to provoke the Ukrainian army. Therefore, to my knowledge, the United States will, without a doubt, provide patrol boats to Ukraine, which will be used to protect the Ukrainian coastline. And yet, the issue of supplying anti-ship missiles is being discussed, which can be used to repel a possible Russian naval attack in or around Ukrainian territorial waters.

UAWire – Ukrainian Ambassador to US surprised that Kyiv purchased French military helicopters but not American

During a press club meeting of leaders of foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the USA Valeriy Chaly stated that Ukraine should have bought US and not French military helicopters, Interfax-Ukraine reported. “I don’t want this to look like I deal only with the USA… but if the country [Ukraine] puts rearmament as its main goal and has limited funds, they should set the priorities right. The countries that provide the maximum assistance to us should be given priority. And the General Staff confirmed that 98% of the assistance that Ukraine has received is provided by the USA,” the Ambassador said. Chaly added that he had previously raised this question with the leadership of the General Staff so he was surprised when Ukraine purchased fifty-five Airbus Helicopters from France. He said that such funds should have been spent on helicopters from the USA. On July 14, the French company Airbus Helicopters signed a contract to supply helicopters for the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Ukraine bought H225, H145 and H125 helicopter models for the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs for 551 million euro, using a 475-million-euro loan at 4.25% interest from the State Treasury of France and a consortium of French banks. In 2018, the Ministry is planning to receive the first four helicopters for its new response service. Apart from the helicopters, on the basis of the established state service center, Ukraine will also receive technical support, maintenance service, trainers and technicians, as well as training for crew and trainers who will train personnel in future. The Ministry explained that purchasing the helicopters was necessary to upgrade the helicopter fleet.

Some say Ukraine’s accession to NATO will provoke more Russian aggression; Ukraine disagrees – Prystaiko | UNIAN

Ukraine does not agree with the opinion of certain NATO Allies that Ukraine’s accession to NATO will provoke Russia for greater aggression, that’s according to the head of Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to NATO, Vadym Prystaiko. Speaking at the MFA Ukraine press club meeting in Kyiv Monday, the diplomat acknowledged that not all members of the Alliance support the idea of Ukraine’s entry into NATO in the current conditions, according to an UNIAN correspondent. “Indeed, most of NATO members are not ready for such a step. We’re not hiding this. We are aware of this fact. There are many reasons,” said Prystaiko. The main reason he called Russia and its possible reaction.

UAWire – Kyiv: Ukraine counts on US help with obtaining NATO membership

Kyiv hopes that the position of the US on Ukraine’s possible membership in NATO will be decisive in the course of discussions about Kyiv’s Euro-Atlantic prospects with partner countries, said Vadim Prystayko, the head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO during a conference in Kyiv, LB.ua news outlet reports. “In NATO, of course, all member states are equal. However, some states are more equal than others, as Orwell put it. We expect that if one of NATO leaders is inclined the way Mr. Bolton promised, I think, this decision will pass more easily,” Prystayko said. Earlier, after the negotiations with the Ukrainian authorities, US National Security Advisor John Bolton said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO was on the agenda of the Donald Trump administration. “The Bush administration proposed in 2008 that the program for admission to NATO be accelerated for Ukraine and other countries, but unfortunately our European counterparts did not agree. But I think that now our administration [of President Donald Trump] is actively considering this issue based on Ukraine’s interests. Several steps have been taken, but much depends on Ukraine – how Ukraine will fulfill the conditions, both political and military ones. But there is progress,” he said. At the same time, many NATO members are against Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance. During her visit to Georgia on August 24, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Georgia will not be able to join NATO and the EU in the near future.

UAWire – Foreign Ministry of France: It’s too early to send UN peacekeepers to Donbas

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said during his speech at the annual gathering of French ambassadors in Paris, on Wednesday, August 29 that it would be premature to send UN peacekeepers to the Donbas,Interfax-Ukraine reports. According to the minister, there is not enough political will to enforce the move. “Let’s be honest. Without local political will, it’s premature or even counterproductive to consider the possible dispatch of the UN mission,” said Le Drian. The Minister added that the implementation of the Minsk agreements is the only possible way to resolve the conflict in the east of Ukraine. Earlier, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko stated that he would remind the UN General Assembly in September of the peacekeeping mission to the Donbas. A few weeks ago, the Foreign Ministers of Germany and Ukraine discussed the said peacekeeping mission.

Few details are known about the new Neptune, but Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Turchynov confirmed on Twitter that it will be an anti-ship cruise missile capable of hitting targets located as far as up to 300 km away. The Neptune missile developed by the State Design Bureau ‘LUCH’ can be launched from ships, coastal mobile missile complex and combat aircraft with the help of a rocket booster that was tested in Odesa region, Ukraine on 18 August. The new cruise missile system will be used to guard straits and territorial waters, to protect offshore sea lines, naval bases, coastal infrastructure, as well as to defend the coast at amphibious landing threat directions within the missile launch range. The Neptun missile is an anti-ship cruise missile featuring a normal aerodynamic configuration with cruciform wings and fins and a semisubmerged air duct intake. The missile is guided to its target at the final leg of the trajectory by commands fed from the active radar homing head and the radio altimeter. According to state defense industry holding UkrOboronProm, the Neptune can sink warships with displacements of up to 5,000 tons which would include all of the Russian landing ships and frigates currently in service. The Neptune missile also has low signatures thanks to its small dimensions, sea-skimming capability and a special guidance algorithm ensuring highly secure operational modes of the active radar seeker.

In addition, the parties noted that Ukraine’s cooperation with NATO remained the cornerstone of Ukraine’s national security. Earl Howe expressed confidence that the results of the last NATO summit in the context of Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations were very positive for Ukraine and its allies. The Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister thanked Earl Howe for the fact that a political and military dialogue between the two countries remained reliable, for helping Ukraine in defense planning, for developing the combat capabilities of the Armed Forces and training the Ukrainian soldiers, as well as the participation of British paratroopers in the military parade on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.

Russia to stage provocations during Patriarch Kirill’s Constantinople visit to tar Ukraine – analyst | UNIAN

In the view of the visit of the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church (headed either by Patriarch Kirill or Metropolitan Hilarion) to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople on August 31 for a meeting with the Patriarch Bartholomew on the issue of preventing the granting of the “tomos on autocephaly” for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Russian special services (FSB and SVR) are setting up in Ukraine a number of provocations to shape up an agenda favorable to Moscow, as well as planning destructive measures in Istanbul, Ukrainian OSINT analysts say. The effort includes involving provocateurs acting as “Ukrainian radicals.”

Russia Is Waging An Unholy War Against Ukraine – To Inform is to Influence

Russia has no morals, no ethics, and no pride, according to their actions in regard to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The decision to grant autonomy to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church appears to be a foregone conclusion, so Russia appears to have launched a pilgrimage to the Pochayiv Lavra, the headquarters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The members of the pilgrimage appear to be thugs, ruffians, and other Russian-hired tough guys. Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra is a monastery in Pochayiv, Kremenets Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. Russia is waging an unholy war against Ukraine. Russia has no soul. </end editorial>

Russia plans to aggressively exploit “political Orthodoxy” factor in Ukraine – analyst | UNIAN

Russia is mulling a wider use of “political Orthodoxy” in Ukraine as the FSB security service and SVR foreign intelligence have ultimately given up on the idea that the process of the Ukraine Orthodox church getting from Constantinople a so-called “tomos on autocephaly,” effectively meaning religious independence from any Russian influence, could be stopped by a range of hybrid methods (bribery, blackmail, or backstage arrangements). According to Dmytro Tymchuk, coordinator of Ukraine-based Information Resistance OSINT community, Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill (Gundyaev) is also well aware that the process is unstoppable. Therefore, he expresses a categorical unwillingness to further speak on the issue with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Under the current circumstances, Kirill considers his earlier announced visit to Constantinople humiliating, now planning to send Metropolitan Hilarion, head of the ROC Department for External Church Relations. At the same time, Hilarion tries to convince Kirill that the latter actually needs to pay such visit, not to further destroy the already affected image of the Russian Orthodox Church. At this point, it is clear that Vladimir Putin and his entourage are gravely disappointed over the latest developments, realizing that they are losing one of the most important levers on Ukraine. The Kremlin’s biggest irritant is the fact that the apparent failure to prevent independence of Ukraine church jeopardizes further efforts to remove the current Ukrainian leadership during the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in 2019 and bring to power in Kyiv other political forces, loyal to Moscow. Therefore, Russian special services seem in their “impotent rage” seem to have decided to opt for the “last resort” measures from their toolkit, which is the threat of force. Reports came this week that the Russian-controlled clergy of Kamianets-Podilsk set up a religious procession heading to the Pochaiv Lavra, while its participants, who looked more like thugs than local believers, were spotted sporting T-shirts with an appeal to “prepare for war.” As we remember, it is the infamous “religious war” that is one of the most prominent “boogeyman stories” used by Ukrainian MP Vadym Novinsky, a vivid supporter of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, as well as various pro-Kremlin “experts,” to intimidate Ukrainian public and international community when they forecast what will happen once independence is granted to the Ukraine church. Besides, the “pilgrims” were carrying an “Orthodox flag of the DPR,” which pro-Russian terrorists “consecrated” in Donetsk in 2014 and which “miners and tractor drivers” were led by in battles against the “Kyiv junta.” The purpose of this showoff is to warn of the Kremlin’s readiness to shed blood on religious grounds, as well as shape up information background for further provocations. In addition, according to the IR community, Russia-controlled clergy from Odesa received yet another order from the secretariat of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Department for External Church Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Poroshenko: Kremlin creating tens of thousands of fake accounts in social networks ahead of Ukraine elections | UNIAN

Moscow’s tentacles have penetrated social networks heavily, according to the president. Russia is preparing for a new powerful manipulation campaign to meddle in the Ukrainian elections scheduled for next year, according to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The elections will be held in the U.S. in November, the renewal of the European institutions – in 2019, while Ukraine is also approaching the period of the electoral campaign. “Leading IT companies have already recorded thousands, tens of thousands of fake accounts with Russian roots being created. Experts elaborate on Kremlin’s strategy to destabilize Ukraine | UNIAN

The Kremlin seeks not only the next election of the head of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “DPR parliament” but also a new referendum on its status. However, the news came earlier about the postponement for an indefinite period of the elections in the “DPR” and “LPR,” initially scheduled for the coming autumn, that’s according to Denis Pushilin, a Kremlin puppet close to Vladimir Putin’s aide Vladislav Surkov, according to the Ukraine-based Information Resistance OSINT community. The most interesting thing is that all of Surkov’s “talking heads” are disingenuously pointing out various reasons why elections have been delayed. The real reason is the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine set to be held in 2019. And here’s the context. According to the strategic concept on Ukraine and “DPR-LPR” that Surkov drafted for Putin, it should be about: 1. Bringing the “pro-Russian” president to power in Ukraine (while there are several players in the deck, for whom different “Kremlin Towers” root); 2. Forming a parliamentary majority around the “pro-Russian” president during elections to the Verkhovna Rada; 3. Beginning direct negotiations between the “new” Ukrainian government and “DPR-LPR,” with the mediation of a “peacekeeper” Moscow, about the readmission of “DPR-LPR” into Ukraine as an autonomy with broad rights; 4. Changing the Constitution of Ukraine by “new” Ukrainian government… under a federative nation; and 5. Conducting elections of new heads of “republics,” the parliament in the “DPR-LPR,” in order to put forward less infamous personas, and a referendum about returning the territories to Ukraine on the rights of autonomy with broad rights.

The return of the godfather: How Putin’s best friend in Ukraine is staging an improbable comeback

Viktor Medvedchuk counts Vladimir Putin as godfather to his daughter and his looking to put himself back on the political map. He is known to his critics as Ukraine’s Prince of Darkness, a toxic presence. But Viktor Medvedchuk would like people to know that he’s back. The former lawyer, a man who counts Russian president Vladimir Putin as godfather to his child, was one of the very first people to be included on US sanctions lists. He was largely sidelined and forgotten after the Euromaidan protests. Yet the pro-Russian operator seems to be engineering an improbable comeback, leveraging in his position as the only Ukrainian capable of negotiating with the Kremlin. First, he was invited to become a special representative at the Minsk peace process – aimed at ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine – and is in charge of prisoner exchanges.
