A former serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who joined the Russian army after the annexation of the Crimea annexation was arrested in the Kirovohrad region, reported the press service of the Military Procurator’s Office of the Central Region of Ukraine.
According to the report, the detainee has been wanted since 2014. He used to be a senior soldier of a Ukrainian military unit in the Crimea. In early March 2014, after the Russian annexation of the peninsula, the soldier did not arrive at his new base on the mainland of Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian special services stated, the detainee served on contract in the Armed Forces of Russia in 2015. After resigning from the service, he returned home to the Oleksandriia district of the Kirovohrad region of Ukraine.
“Investigators are continuing to verify information whether the suspect assisted Russia’s military command with intelligence and subversion activities against Ukraine,” the statement reads. Criminal charges for state treason have been filed.
