Russia has a love-hate relationship with technology, culture, and history.
On the one hand, Russia desperately wants to be seen as cultured, well read, and saturated with good literature.
On the other hand, Russia is a kleptocracy, where the nouveau rich, the oligarchs, ignore the rules meant for little people.
Here, Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor, is reported blacklisting Instagram and YouTube because they are displaying a video showing an oligarch, billionaire Oleg Deripaska, sharing an ‘escort’ with Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Prikhodko on Deripaska’s yacht.
It makes one wonder, does Russia love technology only when it shows Russia as cultured, innovative, or progressive? Is this why Russia is trying to build its own internet and block out the rest of the world?
