Russian Ancestry Overstretch – Again

So much bullshit coming out of Moscow these days.

Here is an official in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that Ivan the Formidable (Terrible) aka Ivan Grozny aka Ivan IV:

  • His father was descended from Augustus Octavian.
  • His mother was descended from Genghis Khan.

A Google translation of what he says:

The Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed is the Spiritual Matrix of Eurasia Eurasia – the main continent of our planet, the cradle of civilization (Kostenki village Voronezh region, Sungir near Vladimir). The key figure of Eurasia is the greatest Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible, who built the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed. Ivan the Terrible – heir to two imperial dynasties of Eurasia. Ivan the Terrible, like Rurikovich, a descendant of the founder of the Roman Empire, Augustus Octavian. Simultaneously, on the maternal line, he is a descendant of Genghis Khan.

Please, if you have a better translation and it substantially changes what I am saying, send it to me.

Coat of arms on the Great Seal. Tsar Ivan IV Vasilyevich, 1577-1578

What our friend in the Kremlin is saying is that the rulers of Russia are descended from two of the greatest rulers of all time. One, the first Roman Emporer and the other the man who founded the Mongol Empire. Both created great empires.

Being descended from one great ruler would have been a great honor, but two?

Ivan IV, Ivan the Formidable, Reign 16 January 1547 – 28 March 1584, noted for his paranoia.

I found no writings linking the two or either one to Ivan IV.  No research, no documentation, no genealogical studies, nothing.  I searched in Russian but couldn’t even find a decent conspiracy theory paper on Cont.ws which stated that Ivan IV or Ivan the Terrible (better translated as Formidable) is descended from either Augustus Octavian or Genghis Khan.

I found one statement of unknown origin because Genghis Khan conquered much of the world and procreated so prolifically, 1/200 people are a descendant of Genghis Khan.  A descendant of Genghis Khan is called a Genghisids, and are generally traceable primarily in Central Asia; Mongolia, Inner Mongolia in China, and Siberia.

From Wikipedia:

DNA evidence

Numerous studies by teams of biochemists, based on the Y-DNA of modern descendants of Genghis Khan, have indicated that Genghis Khan may have belonged to a subclade of Haplogroup C-M217 (C2) such as C-F4002 (C2b1a3).[6]

Proponents of the theory regarding C-M217 have put forward hypothetical Y-DNA profiles, such as a 25 Marker “Genghis Khan” profile released by Family Tree DNA:

Y-STR Name 385a 385b 388 389i 389ii 390 391 392 393 394 426 437 439 447 448 449 454 455 458 459a 459b 464a 464b 464c 464d
Haplotype 12 13 14 13 29 25 10 11 13 16 11 14 10 26 22 27 12 11 18 8 8 11 11 12 16

Zerjal et al. (2003)[7] identified a Y-chromosomal lineage present in about 8% of the men in a large region of Asia (about 0.5% of the world total). The paper suggests that the pattern of variation within the lineage is consistent with a hypothesis that it originated in Mongolia about 1000 years ago, and thus several generations before Genghis’s birth. Such a spread would be too rapid to have occurred by genetic drift, and must therefore be the result of selection. The authors propose that the lineage is carried by likely male-line descendants of Genghis Khan and his close male relatives, and that it has spread through social selection due to the power that Genghis Khan and his direct descendants held and a society which allowed one man to have many children by multiple wives and widespread rape in conquered cities. All male line descendants of Genghis Khan were allowed to have numerous wives.[8]

Research published in 2016 suggested that Genghis possibly belonged to the haplogroup R-M343 (R1b).[9] The controversial result was based on analysis of five bodies, dating from about 1130 – 1250, that were found in graves in Tavan Tolgoi, Mongolia. The remains belong to the Mongoloid physical type and are believed to be possibly related to members of the Mongol “Golden Family”, at around the time of Genghis Khan, although it is uncertain whether the Y-DNA haplogroup marker belongs to the Borijigin clan or the products of clan marriages between the female lineage of Genghis Khan’s Borjigin clan and males of other clans/tribes from Mongolia or Central Asia.

Because there seems to be no evidence, it appears to be yet another attempt by Russia to create a false air of power or royalty.  Just because you say it is so, does not make it true.

Игорь Панарин, you should know this.
