I haven’t had such a laugh in a long time, reading the Ukraine envoy to Britain’s response to Graham Phillips. Laughter is such a cathartic. C’mon, Graham. Admit it, it was funny.
The most interesting media today is around Russia and Ukraine. POTUS in writing praises Lithuania’s support for Ukraine, not doubt a cause for apoplexy in Moscow circles. Two truly bizarre reports out of Russia, the first being the Russian Foreign Ministry hyperinflating Ukrainian combat losses roughly 35-fold, the second being claims that Russia wants to “gift” Snowden to POTUS as a political sweetener – evidently the Russian campaign to build a globalised reputation for absolute perfidy even encompasses political asylum.
Russia is indeed self-typecasting itself into the image of the DPRK.
Since Amb Haley made her statement on Russia, the propaganda, spin and public advocacy emanating from Moscow has verged on the truly bizarre, not unlike the post MH17 flurry of falsehoods. It will be interesting to see whether the Russian propaganda machine attempts a recovery, or continues its current campaign of self-flagellation.
Some excellent Euromaidan essays, and a fascinating interview on Youtube about ferreting out Russian trolls in social media.

An agreement with Putin is an agreement with the devil – Ukraine’s vice-PM on European integration -Euromaidan Press Article by: Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Ukraine’s vice-prime minister on European integration On February 10, the German newspaper Die Welt published an article of the Ukrainian vice-prime minister on European integration Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze about the West’s policy regarding Ukraine and the dangers that this brings. Euromaidan Press, with the permission of the office of the vice-prime minister, is publishing the English version of the article. It has been mostly bad news for Ukraine lately. Thousands of civilians found themselves caught between frost and fire under Putin’s fierce onslaught in Donbas – the worst since early 2015. The Kremlin rubs its blood-smeared hands in anticipation of a new division of the world – anticipating that Ukraine is soon to be theirs. Meanwhile, many in the West seem to be contemplating “all options” to make a deal with Putin.
Rest assured, Marine Le Pen, sanctions against Russia work -Euromaidan Press |Article by: Dirk Mattheisen To hear Marine Le Pen talk, sanctions against Russia don’t work, and she stands a decent chance of being elected president of France. She has company here and there in odd places. The deputy speaker of the Serbian parliament, Gordana Chomich, recently said she could not support sanctions because they hurt the Russian people, and did sanctions actually target oligarchics anyway? So, do sanctions work and who do they harm? The best evidence for the success of sanctions is that Russia has not achieved its goals.
Five more disturbing revenants from Soviet past in Putin’s Russia | EUROMAIDAN PRESSEuromaidan Press |Even as Vladimir Putin claims that Russia is fated to have a great future, the Kremlin leader is doing little to end the impoverishment and repressions of Russians today and ever more to restore many of the worst features of the dark Soviet past. This week has brought five more examples of that retrograde trend. 1. Orwellian “Newspeak” in Russian Legal Practice Orwellian newspeak is returning to Russian legal practice at alarming rates. Asked by the regional news portal 7×7 to comment on the increasing use by officials of terms like “pseudo-religious,” “destructive organizations,” and “anti-social groups, SOVA Center director Aleksandr Verkhovsky said this is extremely dangerous.
How Russian state media misinformed the audience on the escalation in Avdiivka -Euromaidan Press |In 2014, NATO’s General Philipp Breedlove talked about Russia waging “the most amazing information warfare blitzkrieg we have ever seen in the history of information warfare” in relation to obfuscating over its intervention in Ukraine. This week we have seen the “fog of falsehood” fall again, this time in connection with recent violence in the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka. Avdiivka is on territory that should be under the full control of the Ukrainian army, according to the line of conflict stipulated in the Minsk Agreements. On the morning Sunday 29 January, the Ukrainian army reported that Russian-backed militants had begun shelling their positions there. The OSCE special monitoring mission positioned in the city flagged up hundreds of ceasefire violations in both directions of the front. Journalists reported that the shelling came from Russian-backed “separatists” (here, here, and here).
The Kremlin resumes its war against Ukraine, how should the EU react? | Marieluise Beck, German Bundestag -Euromaidan Press Article by: Marieluise Beck, Member of the Bundestag The arms never rested in Donbas. But now the war escalated again. The city of Avdiivka is bombarded from heavy artillery and rockets located in the living areas of Donetsk. Up to 20.000 people had to flee for their lives. Under extremely cold conditions the people had to persist with emergency heating, without electricity and flowing water. Up to 400.000 people are fearing the same destiny. This is a humanitarian catastrophe in the middle of Europe. We don’t have the time to discuss the content of the telephone conversation between President Trump and President Putin. Also we don’t have the time to speculate over the military actions of the Russian-sponsored warlords happening at the same time.
Kremlin trolls exposed: Russia’s information war against Ukraine -Euromaidan Press |UKRINFORM journalist Lana Samokhvalova found something strange while browsing facebook for a schedule of commemorative events dedicated to the Euromaidan Revolution– she accidently unearthed an entire network of very suspicious, self-identified “Ukrainian patriots.” She quickly realized they were Kremlin trolls who had been working systematically to destabilize the situation in Ukraine: “There was a very distinct pattern. Every two-three days, they’d urge people to bring Molotov cocktails to these commemorative events. To overthrow this government, to throw their Molotov cocktails and march on the government. It was very a distinct and systematic call for violence.” The moderator of the group, Mykola Hayduk, called himself Stepan Mazura at the time. It’s hard to keep track of who’s who; they change their display names regularly. But Lana pinned him as the lead author, primary source and instigator of would-be riots. In truth, however, he had no connection to Ukraine whatsoever– except for a patriotic profile picture.
