IO Keywords

Soldiers from the U.S. Army's 350th Tactical P...

Whenever I write a paper about IO, writ large, I put together a compilation of all the IO keywords I can gather. I start with the official websites from the US Department of Defense, especially with Joint Publication 3-13, Information Operations. Eventually I wind up at the US Air Force Cyberspace and Information Operations Study Center here. Here is a short list I’ve compiled.

If I had to recommend one key document to get a good idea about the complexity and nuances of IO, it would be the United States Army War College Information Operations Primer AY11
Information Operations Primer for the Academic Year 2011.  Professor Dennis Murphy has continued making this the definitive book on IO.

Why a keyword list?  I use the keyword list to review, as I write, to make sure I don’t forget to include something.  Yes, I write way too much but I want to make sure I have at least considered as much as possible, deliberating not including some things.

I include much more than conventional military IO terms; I include marketing, advertising terms, social anthropology, human terrain, behavioral modification and so on. Again, this is to create an atmosphere for discussions, to enable more people to talk about their take.  I studiously try to avoid conspiracy theory terms.

I invite you to submit additional keywords. If there is enough interest I will create a share document.  If you leave a comment your email address will appear (only to me) and I will write you quickly.  I do this as a service to the community.  I hope this helps somebody!
